Advocacy and Support for Individuals w/Autism and their Families

Hey there y'all, I put together a short article for Examiner.com about some strategies for maintaining relationships while parenting autistic kids, but was wondering about additional ideas, tips, tricks that you might have come up with over time.

One of ours is that we usually go to the movies once a month and drop our kids off with their grandparents.
Another is that we will actually drop off our neurotypical kiddo with his grandparents for an overnight and have a Mom-Dad-and-ASD-kid special night, just the three of us. This is usually balanced by time spent with our other kiddo too, but we've found that having the quality time just with our autistic son really helps us all to stay bonded.

Hi Beth,
Thanks for sharing your article. Those ideas are really good. I think people make their relationship a low priority and thats what leads to issues. I've learned my lesson the hard way. My husband and I try to make time for ourselves when we can. We have been separated and live in different states right now, which makes it hard, but in some ways that also makes the time we do spend together and with the kids that much more special. I also think we now value our relationship outside of our parenting roles.
